Wester Ross
Another highly characteristic part of the Highlands, Wester Ross is noted for its spectacular mountains, notably in Glen Torridon, which is a glen easily enjoyed by car or on a bike.
North of Ullapool, the Coigach peaks are likewise dramatic, notably the famously pinnacled profile of Stac Pollaidh - though, again, these landscapes can be easily viewed by car tourers from, say, Knockan Crag on the main road north of Ullapool. The Bealach na Ba (the pass of the cattle) on the Applecross peninsula is one of the very highest motorable roads in the UK and also offers grand views from the summit. The Corrieshalloch Gorge is also easily accessible. Close to the main Ullapool road, this mile-long (1.6km), 100ft (61m) river carved channel is one of the best examples of a box canyon in the UK. There is a viewing platform.
As well as easily viewed landscapes, Wester Ross also has some of the most remote and wild (and roadless) land in all of the UK, notably north and west of Loch Maree
Aside from the impact of the landscape, there is also plenty to see. There are gardens at Attadale near Lochcarron, while Inverewe, north of Gairloch, has been a place of pilgrimage for generations of gardeners who come to wonder at the range of tender species which thrive in the mild climate. The human story of the area is told in museums such as the Smithy Heritage Centre in Lochcarron, the Gairloch Heritage Museum and the Ullapool Museum and Visitor Centre
Things to do in the area include (obviously) walking and climbing, with the Torridon Countryside Centre (NTS) or Scottish Natural Heritage's Beinn Eighe Nature reserve visitor centre by Loch Maree as good starting points. Gairloch has a popular golf course and whale-spotting cruises can also be enjoyed here. Other cruises depart from Ullapool and Achiltibuie for the Summer Isles. Angling is widely available throughout the area. Sailing instruction is available on Loch Ewe. There are also leisure centres at Gairloch and Ullapool (including a swimming pool).
